Why Carpet?

Carpeting provides a non slip surface that is warm under your feet. Because of it’s non slip quality carpet is a fabulous option on stairs and is the perfect flooring option for homes with children and elderly. Every carpet and carpet fiber has its own characteristics. Choosing a carpet that is extra soft is easier on the knees of crawling infants and softer on the feet of running toddlers. Some carpets are chosen for their extremely durable characteristics due to the high traffic in a particular area or room in your home. It’s important to assess how much traffic your room gets and the particular function of a room before deciding on carpet or fiber type for the space. For a heavy traffic area, it’s recommended to choose a durable carpet with dense construction. Densely constructed carpets will not allow you to see the carpet backing when looking down at the carpet.

Also, installing carpet in your home can substantially reduce your heating costs resulting in lower energy consumption and a lower heating bill.

Let’s Explore some common myths and facts about carpet and why you should choose carpet for the floors in your home or business.

  • MYTH 1: Asthma and allergy sufferers should not have carpet in the home.

B & V Quality Carpet understands the importance of avoiding allergens in your home. As parents of 5 and grandparents of 10 Brenda and Vinnie deal with both seasonal and environmental allergies on a regular basis. One grandson, in particular, is allergic to both dust mites and cats. One common misconception is that carpets will be an issue for both of those allergens due to housing pet dander and dust mites. However, the EPA scientists concluded that carpet fibers actually help people with allergies by trapping and immobilizing potential allergy-causing particulates. In reality, if allergens are in the carpet, they’re not circulating in the indoor air stream. Shaw recommends using a HEPA-filter vacuum to fully remove such particles from the indoor environment. These vacuums do not have to be expensive and can typically be purchased at your local Wal-Mart or Target store. If you are still concerned please note that there are specially designed hypoallergenic carpets that are available for install.

  • MYTH 2: Carpet is hard to maintain – it stains and wears out very easily.

With a large and growing family Brenda and Vinnie recognize the importance of an easy to maintain, easy to clean carpet. Simple steps can extend the life of your carpet and keep it looking new.  Many quality carpets now include stain guard technology which will prevent staining from normal household spills and mistakes. We offer these products in our show room. Asking family and friends to remove their shoes in your home is not only good for your health its good for ensuring optimal carpet life. Also, vacuuming your carpet at least twice per week will remove soil particles before they get below the surface of the pile, where they are far more difficult to remove. Carpet in a typical household should be thoroughly cleaned every 12 to 18 months. A hot water extraction system will provide the most effective cleaning. Professional carpet cleaners generally get the best results however in home shampooers or ones rented from local stores will produce adequate results that will ensure a clean, strong carpet for years of enjoyment.

  • MYTH 3: Carpet is outdated and boring.

Carpets come in patterns ranging from traditional hounds tooth to exotic zebra. You can purchase carpet in stylish colors like chocolate or mint green or simple colors like beige. This makes it easy to compliment any style and statement that you may be trying to accomplish in your home. Many consumers elect to use a mix of carpet, hardwood and tile in their homes to create their personal style. This is acceptable and encouraged. Your home should be a reflection of you and your personality. It should be your safe landing and a place that you are proud to show to your friends and family. Carpeting your home will help with stopping echos and make your house more of a home. Carpet allows you the ability to share your style while keeping your home warm and inviting.

When you enter their home and showroom you will see that quality carpeting is not only used in every room but done so in a way that accents each room to create a feel and a style. Carpet is one of the lowest emitters of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) among household furnishings and building materials. Shaw carpets meet the industry’s highest VOC standard, the Carpet & Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus program.

  • MYTH 5: Carpet is bad for the environment.

Floor manufacturers now provide many eco-friendly options for environmentally-conscious consumers. Shaw carpets made of Anso or EverTouch nylon can be recycled at Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility, where they are broken down and remade into new carpet fiber. The process helps turn carpet into a renewable product and keeps carpet waste out of landfills. In fact, Shaw has collected 178 million pounds of post-consumer carpet since 2006.
